Trunking physical switch to CCIE R&S Dynamips lab
i am trying to add a Catalyst 3560 (SW5, ignore SW6 for now) switch to my Dynamips lab using only one NIC. SW5 will connect to a NIC that will be bridged to ETHSW1 to connecting a physical network to the R&S lab. (The other NIC will be connected to SW6 and bridge that to another Dynamips switch that will connect it to various VMWare labs. See the attached diagram.)
I have started troubleshooting the connection from SW5 to the ETHSW1. The idea is to set up a trunk to ETHSW1 that branches off and connects to SW1 and R1. See the below configs. When I first boot up the lab, I can see these devices from my physical switch SW5:
SW5#show cdp nei
Capability Codes: R – Router, T – Trans Bridge, B – Source Route Bridge
S – Switch, H – Host, I – IGMP, r – Repeater, P – Phone
Device ID Local Intrfce Holdtme Capability Platform Port ID
SW6 Gig 0/1 143 S I WS-C3560G Gig 0/1
Rack1SW1 Gig 0/48 175 R S I 3640 Fas 1/2
Rack1R1 Gig 0/48 175 R S I 3640 Fas 2/0
What is strange is that I can “sorta” ping R1 from SW5:
SW5#ping 192.168.77.1
Type escape sequence to abort.
Sending 5, 100-byte ICMP Echos to 192.168.77.1, timeout is 2 seconds:
!….
Success rate is 20 percent (1/5), round-trip min/avg/max = 34/34/34 ms
However I cannot ping SW1 at all.
What is interesting is that I tried experimenting with the trunking on SW1 I received these errors:
Rack1SW1(config)#int fa1/2
Rack1SW1(config-if)#switchport mode trunk
Rack1SW1(config-if)#
*Mar 1 00:10:37.571: %DTP-5-TRUNKPORTON: Port Fa1/2 has become dot1q trunk
Rack1SW1(config-if)#exit
*Mar 1 00:10:37.967: %SPANTREE-2-RECV_PVID_ERR: Received BPDU with

id 88 on FastEthernet1/2 VLAN1.
*Mar 1 00:10:37.971: %SPANTREE-2-BLOCK_PVID_PEER: Blocking

onsistent peer vlan.
*Mar 1 00:10:37.995: %SPANTREE-2-BLOCK_PVID_LOCAL: Blocking
FastEthernet1/2 on VLAN1. Inc
onsistent local vlan.
And I receive these errors on my physical switch:
SW5#
00:27:13: %SPANTREE-2-RECV_PVID_ERR: Received BPDU with inconsistent
peer vlan id 1 on GigabitEthernet0/48 VLAN88.
00:27:13: %SPANTREE-2-BLOCK_PVID_LOCAL: Blocking GigabitEthernet0/48

SW5#
00:27:14: %LINEPROTO-5-UPDOWN: Line protocol on Interface Vlan88,
changed state to down
SW5#
00:27:28: %SPANTREE-2-UNBLOCK_CONSIST_PORT: Unblocking

SW5#
SW5#
SW5#
00:27:35: %SPANTREE-2-RECV_PVID_ERR: Received BPDU with inconsistent
peer vlan id 1 on GigabitEthernet0/48 VLAN88.
00:27:35: %SPANTREE-2-BLOCK_PVID_LOCAL: Blocking GigabitEthernet0/48
on VLAN0088. Inconsistent local vlan.
I’ve checked everything I can think of and I’m not sure what’s going on. I’ve even gone into my NIC card on my PC and made sure it was set to speed 100 and duplex full.
