CCIE Lab Setup / Cisco_Godfather
CCIE Lab Setup / Cisco_GodfatherThe following is a post by cisco_Godfather from another site… I was told that it would be better to ask my questions here…
************************************************************
In my case i have done better than your solution.
i have 4X2611 with the max of 16 MB Flash & 64 MB DRAM, and i do have 8 NICs on my PC which is AMD 64 Bit + 2 GB of Ram.
and am in the process of getting a brand new 4X3560 Switches with EMI Code.
i splet my lab to map to the IEWB, how ??? Listen to what i’ve done:
i used DYNAMIPS to run R1 R2 R3 R4 R5 on my PC, and i bridged the ports on the routers to the NICs on my PC using the NIO_gen_eth:\Device\NPF_{xxxxx} command in Dynamips, then i connected those 5 routers to the real switches and they work just perfect.
in the other hand i used the real 2611 routers that i got to run them as R6 BB1 BB2 BB3, and i connected those 4×2611 to the real Switches and thy work goodie.
Now if you notice what i have done, my PC not suffering from the 100% CPU, coz am just running R1 R2 R3 R4 R5 on the PC, and i do have full connectivity between all routers in my PC and the real 2611s that am using.
I recommend this way to simulate the IEWB topologies for those who can afford too buy the full Racks.
in terms of what IOS am running:
R1 R2 R3 R4 R5 ======> c3640.12.4.bin
R6 ===============> c2600-is-mz.122-15.T14.bin by using the tftpdnld -r method you talked about
BB1 BB2 BB3 ========> c2600-is-mz.122-15.T14.bin by using the tftpdnld -r method you talked about
SW1 SW2 SW3 SW4 ====> EMI
if you look to the IOS am using they all just perfect except for the R6 which is ok to run less features than the others.
if you ask me why i split them this way, ok here is the catch: i did split R1 R2 R3 R4 R5 to run on Dynamips coz they do share one Frame Relay Cloud which you cant share with real devices, and for R6 BB1 BB2 BB3 they do share a real Frame Relay Cloud via my 2522 Frame relay Switch, thats the catch.
i do also use a 2509 Access_Server, and i can switch between all the routers via one SecureCRT window, thats so cool folks.
now how much this lab coasted me ?? well the 4 Switches (24 Ports POE) are $7600 + 4×2611 are $1000 + my PC cost.
i had the 2611s and lots of 2501 to practice my CCNA & CCNP knowledge.
am really happy with this CCIE Lab, i know part of it is Dynamips, but its ok as long as its allowing me to practice all the techs. i need there is no worries @ all.
as Groxy said that people who work on Dynamips are not really working on a real devices, for me am out of this coz i do use real devices on my Lab, and i do cabling + working physically with real devices so am fine when i finish my studies to work in the field as it wont be the first time for me to see real routers and switches in the field.
in my lab i do have full connectivity between all the devices, what else do i need huh ?! Nothing but to study the technologies and practice and practice.
Am really advising you guys to do what i’ve done if you want to set a real lab for your CCIE studies, its work just perfect.
i just wanted to share my experience with you as we all here sharing knowledge.
thanks and best regards to all of you

Cisco_Godfather wrote this on another website… I understand that he is a member of this site as well… This post was directed for him but anyone w/ knowledge can look over his post and help me out…
My main question in regards to the post is wouldn’t it be possible to have the same setup, but instead have router’s R1-6 and BB1-3 on the pc, only the switches on the real network…
